BMW is edging closer to unveiling one of its most important electric cars yet. A new teaser confirms that the next BMW i3 will be revealed on 18 March, and this time the name returns with an entirely different mission: replacing the quirky city car of old with a fully fledged electric saloon designed to sit at the heart of the brand’s range.
In other words, the electric BMW 3 Series is almost ready to step into the spotlight.
A Familiar Name, Completely Different Car
For anyone who remembers the original i3 hatchback, the revival of the badge may come as a surprise. The earlier car was a bold, carbon-fibre city EV that looked like nothing else on the road. The new i3 takes a far more conventional approach.
Instead of a compact runabout, the upcoming model will be a four-door executive saloon positioned directly alongside the next-generation 3 Series. It’s expected to become BMW’s electric alternative to the company’s most recognisable model – the car that has defined the brand’s reputation for driver engagement for decades.
This shift makes perfect sense. The 3 Series sits at the core of BMW’s global line-up, and electrifying that segment is essential as the brand accelerates its EV strategy.
Built on BMW’s New Electric Architecture
The new i3 will debut on BMW’s next-generation EV platform known as Neue Klasse, a clean-sheet architecture designed specifically for electric power rather than adapted from petrol models.
This technology brings several major improvements:
- 800-volt electrical system enabling significantly faster charging
- Next-generation battery cells with higher energy density
- Improved efficiency and packaging thanks to a purpose-built EV layout
- Potential for dramatically longer range
BMW claims these sixth-generation battery systems could deliver around 30% more range and faster charging compared with current EV technology.
While official figures haven’t been confirmed, the platform has the capability to push range well beyond today’s electric saloons. In theory, larger battery options could even approach the 500-mile mark in favourable conditions.
Design Inspired by the Neue Klasse Concept
The teaser image hints at a dramatic new look that moves BMW’s design language forward while nodding to its past.
Much of the inspiration comes from the BMW Vision Neue Klasse, the concept revealed in 2023 that previewed BMW’s upcoming electric era.
Key styling cues expected on the production i3 include:
- A slimmer interpretation of the kidney grille, stretching across the nose
- Integrated sensors and lighting within the grille structure
- A clean, minimalist body surface with fewer creases
- Traditional saloon proportions with a modern stance
Spy shots suggest the electric model will resemble the upcoming petrol 3 Series closely, although subtle differences – such as a shorter bonnet and altered proportions – help accommodate the EV layout.
The result should look unmistakably like a BMW, but with a sharper and more modern character.
A Cabin Focused on the Driver
Inside, BMW plans to introduce its next major leap in interior technology.
The i3 will debut the brand’s Panoramic iDrive system, which moves away from the traditional instrument cluster. Instead, key information is projected across the base of the windscreen, allowing drivers to keep their eyes on the road.
Alongside this display will be a centrally positioned touchscreen running BMW’s latest software interface. The aim is simple: reduce clutter, improve usability, and keep the driving experience front and centre.
Given the 3 Series’ reputation for being a driver’s car, that philosophy remains critical—even in an electric future.
Performance and Future Variants
At launch, the i3 will arrive as a traditional saloon, but BMW is unlikely to stop there.
If previous 3 Series generations are anything to go by, expect the line-up to expand rapidly with:
- Touring (estate) variants
- Higher-performance models
- Potentially even a fully electric M3-level performance car
In fact, rumours already point towards an electrified M-division flagship arriving later in the decade.
A Turning Point for BMW’s Most Important Car
The arrival of the electric i3 marks a pivotal moment for BMW. For decades, the 3 Series has been the benchmark for compact executive saloons—balancing practicality, prestige and driving enjoyment.
Now BMW must prove that those same qualities can translate into the electric age.
If the promise of lighter, more agile EV dynamics holds true, the new i3 could become the car that defines BMW’s electric future in the same way the original 3 Series shaped its past.
And with the official reveal just around the corner, we won’t have long to find out.
