Car makers adore a moody special edition. Paint everything black, invent a nocturnal name and wait for the finance calculators to start humming. MINI has followed the recipe with the Countryman SE Midnight Edition, then accidentally made it more interesting by offering the car in blue.
Specifically, buyers can choose Indigo Sunset Blue as well as Midnight Black. Pick the blue. It is new to the Countryman, it still comes with the black roof, and it gives the sizeable electric SUV a fighting chance of being noticed after sunset. Calling that combination ‘Midnight’ is no sillier than pretending every black-trim edition has been raised by wolves.
The useful bits are inside
Beneath the colour chart, this is a fixed-specification Countryman built from Classic trim and offered only with the dual-motor SE ALL4 powertrain. The cosmetic ingredients are pleasantly restrained: 18-inch Asteroid Spoke wheels in Jet Black or Vibrant Silver, dark glass behind the B-pillar and that contrasting roof. No fake racing stripes, no fluorescent badges, no spoiler apparently borrowed from a touring-car paddock.
The cabin upgrade matters more. Heated front seats, wireless phone charging and a head-up display are standard, along with black-and-blue cloth/Vescin upholstery and a dark headlining. There is even a luggage net. That last item will not set Instagram alight, but it may stop a bottle of screenwash bowling through the boot on a roundabout. Sometimes luxury is simply preventing a thud from behind you.
Driving Assistant Plus is included too, bringing active cruise control, lane centring and stop-and-go assistance. Buyers also receive four years of MINI Connected services, covering features such as live traffic information, connected apps and enhanced navigation. Four years is a reasonable spell; the question waiting at the end is what the car still does when the subscription clock runs out.
The grant does the heavy lifting
MINI lists the Midnight Edition at £41,645 on the road and says it qualifies for the full £3,750 Electric Car Grant. Apply that contribution and the effective figure becomes £37,895. Suddenly the special edition looks less like expensive black paint and more like a conveniently bundled electric family car.
That distinction is crucial. A limited-looking trim is easy to dismiss when it merely moves desirable options into a shinier brochure. Here, the government contribution pulls the number below £38,000 while the standard kit includes several things many owners would specify anyway. MINI has not said this is a numerically limited run, so the exclusivity appears to live in the configuration rather than a numbered plaque. Good. A useful car need not arrive with a certificate suitable for framing.
Fast enough, far enough, almost
The recently revised 64.6kWh battery delivers a claimed 285 miles on the WLTP cycle, while DC charging peaks at 130kW. Neither number wins the car-park bragging contest, but together they describe an EV that should tackle ordinary family use without turning every long trip into a charging strategy meeting.
The SE ALL4 reaches 62mph in 5.6 seconds. That is brisk enough to make the luggage net earn its keep, yet the more revealing figure is the range. MINI’s wider 2026 update put the regular SE ALL4 at up to 287 miles after adding a silicon-carbide inverter, more usable battery capacity and lower-friction front wheel bearings. The Midnight Edition’s 285-mile claim is only two miles shy. Nobody sensible should sacrifice a colour they like over a distance shorter than many school runs.
Charging at 130kW is less heroic. Rivals are pushing well beyond that peak, and a family SUV spends more time swallowing motorway miles than posing beneath city lights. The Countryman’s case rests on a usable range, compact-enough footprint and a cabin with actual character. A faster charging curve would strengthen it more than another shade of black ever could.
Blue is the confident choice
First deliveries are expected in early 2027, and orders are open now. The temptation will be to choose Midnight Black because the badge practically fills in the order form for you. Ignore it. Indigo Sunset Blue with silver wheels gives the car contrast, keeps the special edition from disappearing into Britain’s grey traffic and exposes the name as the harmless marketing flourish it is.
MINI has made a better bundle than its costume suggests: sensible equipment, useful assistance tech, all-wheel-drive pace and a grant-aided price with real showroom appeal. The Midnight Edition works because of the practical daylight details. The joke is that it looks most convincing when you refuse to dress it for the dark.
